Madison Release Mugshots and Records
A booking photograph records an adult's appearance during initial intake or routine booking. It is tied to an arrest and booking, not to a later finding of guilt. Release does not erase the photo by itself. It also does not make an old image current. A person can look different, the charge can be dismissed, or the related record can later be sealed.
Virginia law treats an agency's own adult initial-intake photograph differently from protected central criminal-history imagery. Code § 2.2-3706(A)(1) provides a direct government request route for the routine booking image, subject to a temporary ongoing-felony-investigation exception and other legal limits. Juvenile, sealed, and expunged material follows different rules.
A release record and a mugshot answer separate questions. The photo helps match a booking to a person. The CVRJ release log shows when and how the jail ended custody. A court order explains the legal result. Use the records together rather than treating a photo's continued presence or disappearance as proof of release.
Madison Released Mugshot Sources
No single source covers every Madison County booking photo after release. CVRJ houses Madison adults, while the Madison County Sheriff’s Office may hold a photo it created during arrest or intake. State and federal systems have separate records and different display practices.

VINELink is a custody-status and notification service. Do not assume its Madison or CVRJ result will display or preserve a booking photo. Likewise, the Virginia judiciary portal is a case-navigation tool rather than a statewide mugshot archive.

No Madison Release Photo Feed
An audit of the official CVRJ site, sitemap, and Madison Sheriff site found no public recent-release roster with photos. No verified 24-hour or 72-hour feed exists. There is also no known public display-retention period, so no one should claim that a Madison County release mugshot stays online for a fixed number of hours or days.
CVRJ instead directs people to Virginia VINE for person-specific custody status. VINE is not a browseable release-photo ledger. A missing name from an agency page is not proof of release because the official CVRJ homepage is not a person roster in the first place.
The absence of a public gallery makes the records route more important. Ask CVRJ for the booking image and release record when the regional jail created or holds them. No Madison Mugshot App Verified
Neither CVRJ nor the Madison County Sheriff links an official jail app or released-booking-photo app from the official pages reviewed. A similarly named product in an app store should not be treated as an official county source. It may combine other jurisdictions, current inmates, old arrests, or images obtained from an unknown source.
The official digital route for a specific CVRJ custody event is the facility's link to Jail VINE. The durable photo route is an adult initial-intake records request. If an agency later launches an app, its ownership, data source, update schedule, and photo-retention rules should be verified from the agency's own website before the app is described as official.
Commercial archives and local news may preserve an old image. They can help locate a possible source, but no commercial mugshot publisher or removal vendor is endorsed or linked. Confirm the person with a booking number, court case number, or other official identifier, then confirm release through the custodian.
Request a Madison Booking Photo
Send a jail-custody request to the CVRJ Custodian of Records at 13021 James Madison Highway, Orange, VA 22960. Call 540-672-3222 to confirm the preferred submission method. Identify Madison as the committing jurisdiction so the custodian can separate the booking from records for the four other member counties.
- Identify the person and give an approximate booking date. Add the booking or court case number when known.
- Ask for the existing adult initial-intake or routine booking photograph in electronic form.
- Also ask for the booking and release record, including admission and release timestamps, disposition or authority, and receiving agency for a transfer.
- Cite Code § 2.2-3706(A)(1) for the adult booking photograph and permit lawful redaction of exempt material.
- Ask for a cost estimate before work exceeds a stated limit. No fixed CVRJ photo fee was verified.
- Keep the response with the matching court order. The photo alone does not explain the charge result or jail exit.

Madison Photo Request Limits
Virginia Code § 2.2-3704 does not require a request to use the word FOIA or to be written, though a written request creates a useful trail. Describe existing records with reasonable detail. The public body ordinarily responds within five working days by producing records, citing a basis for withholding, reporting that records cannot be found, or invoking more time. A proper extension generally adds seven working days, while criminal investigative files have a special longer provision.
Reasonable actual production charges are allowed. An advance deposit may be required when an estimate is likely to exceed $200. Asking for electronic delivery and a cost estimate can keep the request focused. Do not demand that the agency create a new narrative, identify a person from a photo, or calculate facts that are not in an existing record.
The adult booking-photo rule is not absolute. An agency may temporarily withhold an image when release would jeopardize an ongoing felony investigation. Sealed or expunged records are not disclosed through the ordinary FOIA path. Identity, juvenile, and custody-specific restrictions can also affect a response.
Note: Request the creator's booking image, not central criminal-history imagery, and give enough booking detail to avoid a same-name mismatch.
Other Madison Released Photo Channels
A VADOC result may show public custody or supervision information, but no authoritative source found in the Madison research guarantees a photograph for every current or former state record. Do not promise that a fully discharged person will remain searchable or pictured. The VADOC locator should be checked as it exists at the time of the search.
The Virginia State Police registry includes a photograph for a covered public registrant under Code § 9.1-913. It is narrow. Registration applies only to people whose convictions create that legal duty, and registry absence says nothing about an ordinary Madison County release. The photo is a registry image, not necessarily the CVRJ booking mugshot.

BOP's locator is a federal release-status source, but it does not promise a booking photograph. U.S. Marshals policy generally limits photo disclosure. A federal court filing or government press release may contain an image in a particular case. Use it only when the identity is clear, and do not treat the image as proof of release from CVRJ.
Madison Mugshots After Record Sealing
Virginia's expanded sealing framework took effect July 1, 2026. It applies to defined records across specified Virginia courts, police repositories, the Central Criminal Records Exchange, and DMV. Sealing is an access change. It does not prove that the past custody event never occurred. It also does not automatically control federal repositories, news archives, or every independent copy. Do not evade a lawful seal by seeking an old image from another source, and do not promise that one order removes every copy from the internet.

Verify a Madison Mugshot Match
Start with the booking identifier, court case number, and booking date. Compare the agency named on the photo with the agency that holds the release record. A Madison arrest can lead to CVRJ, VADOC, federal custody, or ICE custody, and those systems do not share one photo archive.
Next, confirm the custody event. The Madison County released inmates search path uses CVRJ and VINE for the regional jail, VADOC for state custody or supervision, and the court record for the legal outcome. A transfer to another custodian is not release to the community.
