Check VADOC Release Status

To find someone released from the Virginia Department of Corrections, use the statewide offender and supervisee system rather than a Madison County jail source. A Madison conviction does not mean the person served a sentence in Madison, and no state prison is located in the county. State custody can occur at any VADOC reception center or institution. Release from a prison gate may also begin community supervision instead of ending the sentence. The right check distinguishes active confinement, release to supervision, and full discharge, then preserves a record or court order when the public locator no longer carries the person.

Where VADOC Releases Go

The Virginia Department of Corrections runs the state prison and community-supervision system. A person sentenced from Madison County may enter VADOC custody after time at Central Virginia Regional Jail. That step is a transfer, not a community release. At the end of state confinement, the person may leave on probation, parole for an eligible sentence, mandatory release under an older regime, post-release supervision, or final discharge.

Release from an institution and discharge from the sentence are different events. An active supervisee record can confirm that the person left prison while correctional control continues in the community. VADOC’s directory assigns Culpeper Probation and Parole District 26 to Madison, Culpeper, Greene, and Orange. A record tied to District 26 may therefore be the correct Madison post-release result even though the prison was elsewhere.

Search VADOC Release Records

Open the official VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator. VADOC says the public data is updated daily and warns that complete, current accuracy is not always possible. Search by seven-digit DOC ID when known. Otherwise, enter at least the first three letters of the first name and the full last name, then use optional location, race, gender, or age-range filters to narrow common names.

  1. Choose DOC ID or name search and enter the required fields.
  2. Complete the disclaimer and reCAPTCHA presented by VADOC.
  3. Open the matching individual record rather than relying on a result snippet.
  4. Copy the status, DOC ID, facility or supervision office, and dates exactly as labeled.
  5. For durable proof, request VADOC records and compare the sentencing order.

A future date for a person still in custody is projected, even if the public field is labeled simply “release date.” It can change with sentence data, credit calculations, court orders, disciplinary action, parole decisions, or detainers. Only a past release result, official release document, or actual-release notice proves the event took place.

Important: VADOC does not cover every CVRJ booking and does not promise a permanent public archive after full discharge.

Madison VADOC Search Fields

The locator bridges custody and supervision, but each displayed field must be read in context. A location can be a prison or, for a released supervisee, a community office. The public page should be treated as an agency report, not a certified record. Save the DOC number and exact date labels before contacting VADOC about a discrepancy.

The Madison County jail and VADOC have different populations. A short local sentence at CVRJ may never create a useful VADOC public result. Conversely, a person transferred from CVRJ to VADOC may appear only after state intake and system updates. Search both only when the custody facts justify both systems.

VADOC Release Timing Rules

VADOC’s facility-release information says a person leaving on discharge or parole is released by 11:59 p.m. on the scheduled date, weather permitting. That is a statewide prison rule. It does not apply to CVRJ and does not promise a morning pickup time. Code § 53.1-28 also permits the Director to discharge a state-system prisoner within 30 days before the date on which the term would normally expire for preparation and scheduling.

Sentence credits do not create one universal percentage. Modern Earned Sentence Credits vary by offense and classification under Virginia law. Older Good Conduct Allowance rules govern certain earlier cases. Mandatory minimums, sentence structure, loss or restoration of credit, amended orders, and detainers can all affect the calculation. VADOC calculates active state-responsible terms longer than 12 months, while the local or state authority may calculate other terms depending on sentence type.

Note: Never calculate an individual release date by subtracting a stock credit rate from the sentence announced in court.

VADOC Release Record Requests

When the locator is not enough, use the VADOC contact and records channels. Ask for public fields tied to a named person and DOC ID: commitment information, custody or parole status, public facility or supervising location, and the projected or actual release date. Medical, victim, presentence, Social Security, and other protected material should not be requested through a general public-record inquiry.

For time-computation questions, research identifies VADOC Court & Legal/Correspondence Unit, P.O. Box 26963, 6900 Atmore Drive, Richmond, VA 23261. State the court case, DOC ID, date label at issue, and the existing document sought. A VADOC release document and final sentencing order create a more durable trail than a public locator result that may later change or disappear.

Projected release
A future calculated date that remains subject to change.
Parole
Conditional community release for a legally eligible sentence.
Supervision
Correctional control in the community after confinement.
Discharge
The end of the custody or supervision obligation recorded by the responsible authority.

Madison District 26 Releases

The VADOC facilities and offices directory identifies Culpeper District 26 as serving Madison County. Use the live directory for current office details because listings can change. A District 26 result may show that the person has left a state institution but remains subject to probation, parole, or another form of community supervision.

Do not call an active supervisee fully discharged. Supervision ends only when the responsible authority records discharge. If the person does not appear in the current locator after supervision ends, use VADOC records and the court order. The Madison probation and parole page covers the distinction between court-ordered probation and parole release more closely.

VADOC Release Notices

Virginia uses a separate state-custody notification service called NAAVI for qualifying victims. It is not the same as local Jail VINE, and a registration does not automatically follow a person from CVRJ into VADOC custody. NAAVI can report an anticipated release and an actual release within its stated scope. The service defines an advanced release as an expected event, while an actual release means the person is no longer in VADOC custody.

That distinction mirrors the locator rule. An anticipated date helps with planning but is not proof. An actual event notice, state release document, and court order provide a stronger chain. NAAVI does not cover probationers or parolees after the state-custody event ends, so a Madison supervision check returns to the VADOC locator and District 26. Local jail custody requires a separate Jail VINE registration.

The captured source helps keep state-prison timing separate from CVRJ rules, which are set by the regional jail rather than VADOC’s institution-release page.

Prove VADOC Final Discharge

A locator no-result is weakest at the point of full discharge because the current public tool does not promise indefinite retention after both custody and supervision end. Build durable proof before relying on absence. Save the DOC ID and exact displayed status while a record is active. Obtain the final sentencing order, any release document, and the agency record that states the actual release or discharge date.

Virginia Code § 53.1-160 shows that official release information exists outside the public locator. Before a covered release or discharge, VADOC sends notice to specified courts and law-enforcement or prosecutorial officials tied to the offense, former residence, and intended residence. That agency-to-agency notice is not a public search portal, but it confirms that the web result is not the only release record in the state system.

Phrase the conclusion to match the proof. “Released from a VADOC institution to District 26 supervision” describes a prison exit with ongoing control. “Discharged from VADOC” requires the state record showing that the obligation ended. If only a projected date appears, state that it is a current calculation. These distinctions keep a Madison County result accurate even as the public locator changes.
